ADHD Couples Therapy in Vancouver
ADHD can affect a relationship in ways that aren't always immediately recognized. Differences in communication, attention, emotional regulation or managing responsibilities can leave both partners feeling frustrated or misunderstood.
I offer ADHD couples therapy in Vancouver and online throughout BC to help couples better understand these challenges and find ways of relating that work for both partners.
When ADHD Affects Your Relationship
When one or both partners have ADHD, everyday interactions can sometimes become sources of ongoing frustration. One partner may struggle with remembering commitments, following through on plans or staying engaged during conversations. The other may feel they're carrying more of the responsibility or that their concerns aren't being taken seriously.
Over time, these experiences can take on a meaning beyond the original issue. A forgotten task may begin to feel like a lack of consideration. A reminder may be experienced as criticism. Both partners can become caught in a pattern where one feels increasingly responsible and the other feels continually misunderstood or inadequate.
ADHD doesn't explain every relationship difficulty, and these patterns aren't inevitable. Understanding how ADHD may be influencing your interactions can help you separate intention from impact, recognize each person's experience and begin approaching familiar challenges differently.
ADHD Couples Therapy May Help With:
Communication Difficulties
ADHD can affect attention, listening and how quickly someone responds during a conversation. Counselling can help both partners understand these differences and develop ways of communicating that allow each person to feel heard.
Unequal Responsibilities
When one partner takes on more of the planning, organizing or remembering, resentment can develop. Therapy can help couples examine how responsibilities are shared and create practical systems that work with ADHD rather than against it.
Recurring Conflict
A forgotten commitment or unfinished task can quickly become a larger argument about reliability or respect. We can look at the patterns beneath these conflicts and how each partner's responses may be contributing to the cycle.
Some people with ADHD experience emotions intensely or find it difficult to pause once they become overwhelmed. Couples counselling can help partners recognize escalating interactions and develop healthier ways of responding during difficult moments.
Emotional Regulation
Feeling Criticized or Misunderstood
One partner may feel they're constantly reminding or correcting, while the other feels that nothing they do is good enough. Therapy can help couples understand how these roles developed and begin moving toward a more collaborative relationship.
Emotional & Physical Disconnection
When much of a relationship becomes focused on managing responsibilities or recovering from conflict, intimacy can suffer. Counselling can help couples explore what has contributed to that distance and make room for greater understanding and connection.
My Approach to ADHD Couples Counselling
I believe it's important to understand the role ADHD plays in a relationship without making it responsible for every difficulty. Both partners bring their own experiences, needs and ways of responding, and understanding how these interact is an important part of our work.
My approach is warm and collaborative, while also being gently directive when I think it may be helpful. I'll help you slow down recurring interactions, look more closely at what's happening between you and recognize the patterns that may be keeping you stuck.
As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, I bring 20 years of counselling experience to my work, along with extensive training in ADHD and experience supporting both individuals and couples. I also have training in the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy and Relational Life Therapy.
I don't believe the goal is to make the partner with ADHD behave more like the partner without it. Instead, I work with couples to develop greater understanding, take responsibility for their respective contributions and find practical ways of creating a relationship that feels more balanced and connected.
Understanding ADHD Relationship Patterns
One of the most helpful shifts couples can make is moving away from asking who is responsible for the latest disagreement and becoming more curious about the pattern surrounding it.
For example, one partner may forget an important commitment. The other becomes frustrated and begins reminding them more frequently. The partner with ADHD feels criticized and withdraws or reacts, leaving the other feeling even less confident that things will change.
Neither person may intend to create this dynamic, but both can become caught in it.
In ADHD couples therapy, we can work toward recognizing these cycles earlier, understanding the feelings beneath each person's response and developing different ways of communicating and sharing responsibility.
Practical changes may also be part of the work, including clearer agreements, shared systems and approaches to managing everyday responsibilities. Understanding ADHD provides useful context, but meaningful change also involves considering the impact of our behaviour on one another.
