Family estrangement can be a painful and complicated experience, whether you've chosen to create distance or someone you care about has stepped away from the relationship.
I offer estrangement therapy in Vancouver and online throughout BC to help individuals and families understand difficult relationship dynamics, process the impact of estrangement and consider what moving forward might look like.
Estrangement Therapy in Vancouver
When Family Relationships Become Estranged
Estrangement rarely happens in isolation. Sometimes it follows a significant conflict or painful event. Other times, distance develops gradually after years of misunderstandings, unresolved hurt, difficult family dynamics or attempts to address concerns that haven't led to meaningful change.
You may be an adult child who has chosen to limit contact with a parent, a parent struggling to understand why your adult child has stepped away, or a sibling navigating a relationship that has become increasingly strained. Family members can experience the same relationship very differently, and those differences may be part of what makes estrangement so difficult to understand.
Estrangement counselling provides an opportunity to explore these experiences without assuming that one person's perspective tells the whole story. Together, we can look at the patterns and events that contributed to the distance, the impact it has had and what you need from the relationship moving forward.
Estrangment Therapy May Help With:
Parent & Adult Child Estrangement
Estrangement between parents and adult children can bring grief, confusion, anger and uncertainty. Counselling can help you better understand the relationship, explore what contributed to the distance and consider what may be possible moving forward.
Sibling Estrangement
Relationships between adult siblings can be complicated by different childhood experiences, family roles, unresolved conflict or disagreements involving other family members. Therapy can help you explore these dynamics and what they mean for your relationship today.
Grief & Loss
Estrangement can involve grieving someone who is still alive, along with the relationship you had or hoped to have. Counselling provides an opportunity to acknowledge these losses and work through the emotions that may accompany them.
You may find yourself questioning your decisions, wondering what you could have done differently or feeling judged by others. Therapy can help you explore these feelings with greater understanding and consider what responsibility is yours to carry.
Guilt, Shame & Self-Doubt
Boundaries & Expectations
Differences around boundaries, roles and expectations can contribute to ongoing tension within families. Counselling can help you better understand your needs, communicate boundaries and consider how to respond when those boundaries aren't respected.
Reconnection & Relationship Repair
Some family members hope to rebuild their relationship but aren't sure where to begin. Therapy can help you explore what repair might require, whether both people are willing to participate and how to approach difficult conversations with greater understanding.
My Approach to Estrangement Counselling
Family estrangement is rarely straightforward. Each person brings their own history, experiences and understanding of what has happened, and these perspectives may differ significantly.
My role isn't to determine who is right or wrong or to encourage reconciliation simply because you're family. I want to understand your experience, help you explore the dynamics that have contributed to the estrangement and consider what a healthier way forward might look like for you.
I take a warm and collaborative approach, while also offering perspective, direction and gentle challenge when I think it may be helpful. Together, we can look at long-standing patterns, difficult emotions and ways of responding that may be contributing to the current situation.
As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, I bring 20 years of counselling experience to my work, including experience supporting parents and adult children as well as adult siblings navigating estrangement.
Whether you're hoping to reconnect, trying to understand why a relationship has changed or coming to terms with ongoing distance, our work will be guided by your circumstances and goals.
Is Reconciliation Always the Goal?
When people seek estrangement therapy, they may be at very different points in their experience. A parent may be hoping to reconnect with an adult child who has stopped communicating. An adult child may be questioning whether maintaining distance is the right decision. Siblings may want to repair their relationship but feel uncertain about how to address years of unresolved hurt.
Reconciliation isn't necessarily the goal in every situation, nor is it always possible or appropriate. Sometimes counselling involves exploring what meaningful repair would require, including accountability, changed behaviour and a willingness to understand another person's experience. In other situations, the work may focus on establishing boundaries, processing grief or accepting that the relationship may not change in the way you had hoped.
You don't need to have decided what you want the outcome to be before beginning therapy. Part of our work can be understanding your options and considering what feels realistic and healthy for you.
